Christmas cookie swap: cinnamon roll cookies, gingerbread butterscotch, Danish salted butter cookies

Every year, my good friend Jenn invites a group of like-minded professional women to her lovely home for my favourite event of the year: her cookie swap. The invite list comprises a curated group of her friends; some of us are more into baking than others, others more into cooking, one of us is an expert cookie decorator, but we all love to eat — and talk. And talk we do, all the while standing around a buffet table of cheese and charcuterie, or banh mi sandwiches, or homemade sushi. Savoury to offset the sweet.  The afternoon passes quickly and I drive home on a sugar high, my heart full and with a take-home container overflowing with dozens of cookies. The cookie swap is usually the event that launches the holiday season for me. Looking back, last year I was feeling ill enough that it may have been wise to skip the cookie […]

The ultimate cookie swap addition: Chef Michael Smith’s Sparkle Cookies

If you’re like me and attend a holiday cookie swap every year, these sparkle cookies should be in your repertoire. I purchased Michael Smith’s latest book and when I got to the back of the book, the desserts section, I was rather somewhat taken aback to read that the sparkle cookies were among the best he had ever baked. Really? Ever? They seemed nice enough, but… best? But Michael Smith, to me, is one of those voices I unreservedly trust. His recipes are always perfection and turn out beautifully. On a more savoury note, I have also made several other recipes from that book “Back to Basics” and they were all A+. If you are a fan like I am, you might know he has many of his recipes online, but not all of the ones in his latest tome are readily available – so, yes, buy the book! As […]

Christmas tree shortbread cookies

I realized recently when I was scrolling back in time on my blog that there are so many desserts I’ve made but not posted here, so my goal over the holidays is to publish some of my more recent creations. Which leads me to these Christmas tree shortbread cookies…I have to admit shortbread isn’t my forte. And yet whenever I try a shortbread that’s absolutely amazing the recipe is no different from any of the variations I’ve tried. So the truth is I don’t have high expectations for when I make shortbread and I’ll typically make it when I want to keep things simple. I decided to make this recipe more so for the canvas on which to decorate with my kids than to try to master shortbread. I was aiming for a similar look to the original, which you can find here, but I quickly gave up that idea […]

Alton Brown’s Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie

I went through a phase a few years ago where I was trying to find the recipe for the perfect chocolate chip cookie, I think I came pretty close with a few great recipes from my experiments, five years ago, but my appetite has not waned. I’m a sucker for a good cookie. And a good cookie will tempt me to stray from my diet, every time. When I saw Alton Brown post his recipe for ‘ The Chewy,’ my curiosity was piqued since his approach is quite scientific. This recipe, unlike the others I’ve tried, holds true to its promise. It is truly chewy, on the day it’s first baked, even the day after, and the day after that. It also looks almost like it came out of a bag or straight off the cookie sheet at your neighbourhood bakery. It doesn’t quite live up to the promise […]

Dulce de leche thumbprint cookies with sea salt

If I had to summarize my last 12 months of baking with two ingredients, I’d have to say they were: dulce de leche and sea salt. So, despite the fact I’d already picked my contributions for the annual cookie exchange I love to attend, I simply couldn’t resist adding this to my roster at the last minute when it popped up online. To be honest, I thought I would be mixing Nutella and dulce de leche somehow but the recipe calls for Nutella to be used in half the batch and dulce de leche to be used in the other half. Since I had so much dulce de leche, however, I simply used it on all the cookies. As I mentioned this was one of my three types of cookies I took to my friend’s annual cookie swap: The others were the pecan pie cookie, and a chocolate chip cookie I’d never tried before. […]

Chocolate, hazelnut and caramel thumbprint cookies

I think these thumbprint cookies are among the loveliest cookies I have ever seen. I’d been holding on to this recipe for months, planning to make it for this year’s cookie swap at my good friend Jennifer’s house. The other cookies I took were the sparkle cookies I’ve blogged about recently. (I must say, here that I think the sparkle cookies ended up being more popular than these ones, but I prefer these myself). Despite the fact I try to stay away from multi-step recipes after having kids, this one worked to my advantage because I was able to do a couple of steps, leave the cookies and come back to them later. However, you want to be careful to allot yourself a good amount of time near the end when you top the cookies with the caramel, then the chocolate, then the hazelnut. You don’t want to let the […]

White-Chocolate Cherry Shortbread

This recipe caught my eye on Pinterest with the simple caption: “Apparently, the best Christmas cookie ever.” “Best” piqued my interest, and “ever” drove it home.  How could I possibly ignore the recipe for the best Christmas cookie ever? So I decide to make it on a whim and take it to my friend’s house as my contribution to her annual cookie swap. I had already made a couple of other kinds of cookies but this one seemed like it would be my show-stopper.Besides, I have never been able to truly master shortbread, and I thought this might be the recipe to change my unlucky streak. Not quite. This is a pretty cookie yes, but it’s also a high-maintenance one. Unlike classic shortbread, it’s delicate and doesn’t hold its form well.   What really bothered me though, and I swear I’m not this insecure about everything, is that no […]

Cookbook Review: Nigella Lawson’s Kitchen

Just when I thought Nigella couldn’t possibly produce another cookbook, she came out with this nearly-500 page heavyweight “Kitchen: Recipes from the Heart of the Home.” (Knopf Canada) Like many of her previous cookbooks, this one is meant to give us a glimpse into her household, by way of her feel-good food solutions for the harried weekday cook. Can this book live up to the high standard of past success? I’ve interviewed Nigella in the past and she was nothing if not utterly charming. Exactly what you’d expect. But lately, I will sadly admit, some of her recipes have been hit or miss. I am going to take partial responsibility for this though, because I don’t embark on any of her recipes without keeping in mind she is not a professional chef. Nor does she pretend to be. While I follow some pastry recipes with military discipline, there are some recipes, like Nigella’s, that I […]
