Perfect Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta

I’d never been a huge fan of panna cotta. If I was at an Italian restaurant, I’d much rather have the tiramisu than the panna cotta. Or the bombe oozing with Nutella. I used to always think panna cotta was too boring, too safe. I was so very wrong. And this, this recipe is a revelation. I considered not blogging about it all because the secret would be out. That one of the best desserts I’d ever made is so incredibly easy to execute. Easy, and stunning, too, in its simplicity. But not boring. Never boring. You can find the recipe from David Lebovitz’s blog here. I’d made this some time ago but winter didn’t seem the right time to blog about it. Indeed, I’m writing about this now because the weather is finally warming up and it’s a lovely end to a summer meal. Even better in my books: If […]

Pioneer Woman’s Lemon Bars

The craving hit me like a ton of bricks. I needed lemon bars with a buttery shortbread crust and I needed them immediately. These are one of those things that bakeries don’t always get right. Either they have been sitting out too long, or they are divine and I finish every last crumb and I still haven’t had enough. So, I decided to make them myself. These are one of those desserts that it’s worth making yourself because it only takes a small investment for a huge return. Also, how beautiful are these stunning lemons? I have to admit I was so bowled over by the tangy, buttery result that I didn’t take the right pictures. Because these bars are so decadent, a little square goes a long way. Feel free to freeze half the batch for a later date. Here’s the recipe. Substitutions: I used Meyer lemons which aren’t […]

Salted Caramel Eggnog Fudge Brownies

Full disclaimer, I’ve been sick for about two months with various ailments and I’ve been less ambitious with my baking this year, which means I’m relying on a lot of tried-and-true goodies. These bars, which I made for a couple of potlucks last year, had a fantastic yield and were a big hit. So, I decided not to blog about it right after the fact, instead I decided to keep my blog for a more timely holiday post. Apologies for the fuzzy photo that doesn’t show clean lines. I nearly decided to skip the post because I didn’t have a great photo. Truth is, whenever I make something for a potluck for a group of people, I’m either scrambling to make it, or store it in a transportable container, so the photo often suffers. I decided to make this recipe because I never met a salted caramel recipe I didn’t like. I also, similarly, […]

Holiday pavlova wreath

If you’re like me, you’ve already made your list for your Christmas baking. You may even have started to put some in the freezer for later this year. And if you’re really like me, you can’t help but keep your eyes peeled for new recipes that might strike your fancy. If you’ve already made your list, you may want to make room for one more – this pavlova wreath. Not only does it have a lovely presentation, you can make the meringue in advance. Even better, you can even make the sugared cranberries in advance. Just don’t rush yourself when it is time to make it. You can find the recipe here. Word of warning: If you’ve never made a meringue before, you may want to try your hand at it before taking this as your contribution to a holiday party or if it’s meant to be show-stopping dessert at a multi-course […]

Rice Krispie pumpkin treats

I made these for Halloween last year, my attempt to get into the holiday spirit. My youngest son, who will be 4 soon, just loves Halloween. He also has a major sweet tooth so when he figured out we go door to door to collect the sweet stuff, he was thrilled. He pretty much asks about Halloween all year long. I never felt that way about Halloween though, maybe it’s because I was never too into dressing up, or by the time I had kids they were always sick in October. In any case, I made these last year and I was not bowled over. But, they were dead easy. And if you feel you must make something at home, or if you need to take something to a potluck or for a Halloween-themed party, these will do in a bind. Bonus, I still had the green jelly beans leftover from […]

Kenafeh cheesecake

I still get asked why I have a food blog. Or why I take pictures of the things I make. Because I want to remember. I want to look back and find joy in the things I was able to create with my own two hands. It’s that simple. When I take a hiatus from baking, it’s usually because I’ve lost my mojo temporarily: I don’t feel like creating anything. And I did take an extended hiatus this year. It’s not unusual. Usually the rest of my life has emotionally exhausted me. I have too many things to think about and even the thought of bringing out my mixer or staring at a pile of dirty dishes is enough to stress me out. But when I finally get going in the kitchen, mixing and pouring and stirring, it’s not because I’ve suddenly come into extra hours in my day. It’s because I […]

The Pioneer Woman’s Halloween bark

I made this bark last year, but by the time I got around to uploading the pics, Halloween was well over. But now that September is officially here, and Pumpkin Spice Latte is on the menu at Starbucks, I thought to myself, it’s time to look to the fall and all the glorious things the season brings. In any case, I really made this because I loved the colours. I made two batches – one with white chocolate and one with semi-sweet. Truth be told, I probably preferred the semi-sweet version but the white showcases the colours of the ingredients better. Really, it’s hard to get this wrong. This recipe has that much going for it. That, and the fact you can customize it based on your tastes. But other than that, put this one under the list of things you can make with your kids. No matter how you feel […]

No-bake funfetti cheesecake

I’ve been holding on to this blog post for months. Many many months. Has it been more than a year? Perhaps. The reason why I’m torn is because while I was making this for a dinner for my mom I was convinced it would be a huge hit. Sprinkles, cheesecake, funfetti! Plus, we wouldn’t feel guilty eating it. What could go wrong? But instead, it was kind of… meh. Even now, looking at the recipe, I’m surprised to remember just how underwhelmed I was. I should have either served the real thing, or served a fruit salad. I’m an all or nothing kind of gal. Here’s the thing: if you are going to make this, you can’t really think of it as cheesecake. If you are on a diet, and have a serious hankering for cheesecake, this recipe may help nip that in the bud for you. But if it […]

Bonnie’s holiday tart

I’ve known Bonnie Mo since our Ryerson University days, back when she was Bonnie Malott and we were journalism school undergrads. We kind of fell out of touch after tying the knot and having children, as one does, but I always kept with her career on social media – with increasing attention when she began writing for Food Network Canada and developing recipes. She’s the real deal.  You can check out her website here. So when I saw her Instagram post for her holiday tart, I knew it was going to have to be a last-minute addition  to my holiday menu. 🎄 Caramelized onion, hot pepper raspberry jam, pancetta & brie. The Holiday Tart makes its annual appearance. A photo posted by 🐝Bonnie (@bonniemo) on Nov 20, 2015 at 4:12pm PST And even though I was near-crazed, like I always am at that time of year, with the amount of food I […]

Butterscotch Fluffernutter Krispy Bars

It’s been ages – like months – since I’ve felt comfortable sitting down doing nothing. But my dishwasher is whirring, the kids have been fed, I have leftovers for dinner, tomorrow’s lunches are packed, my work clothes picked. I really don’t have any excuse not to sit down and enjoy my Fortnum & Mason Earl Grey tea while it’s still hot. That’s a lie. I have a basket of laundry waiting to be folded. But I always have a laundry basket waiting to be folded. So I deserve this break, right? In any case, I made this ages ago. And I forgot what the recipe was so I hemmed and I hawed and I delayed blogging about anything. But after doing some online sleuthing, I realized I found it. Here it is if you decide to make it, and I think you will.  I also realized that I had some residual […]
